Bafana Bafana captain Thulani Hlatshwayo hopes Orlando Pirates recruit Vincent Pule gets a chance to showcase his ability in the 2019 African Nations Cup qualifier with Libya.
Pule was only called up on Monday by coach Stuart Baxter along with Aubrey Modiba and Tiyani Mabunda following injuries to midfielders Themba Zwane, Bongani Zungu and Hlompho Kekana.
Baxter also roped in Bidvest Wits attacker Mxolisi Macuphu yesterday due to the unavailability of France-based hitman Lebo Mothiba.
Wits skipper Hlatshwayo has been particularly impressed with Pule, who has played all of Pirates’ matches this season since joining the Soweto giants from the Students.
“For sure I’m hoping for the guy [to play], especially Pule, Vincent Pule.
“So that he can display his talent,” ‘Tyson’ added.
Meanwhile, Hlatshwayo admitted it was depressing for the national side to watch the 2017 AFCON and 2018 World Cup on TV following their failure to qualify for both showpieces.
“We obviously weren’t happy to be able to sit at home and watch the World Cup,” Hlatshwayo said.
“More so watching Senegal and Nigeria playing the games knowing very well that we just beat Nigeria [in the first AFCON 2019 qualifier] away.
“Now the guys shouldn’t be discouraged. We just need to make sure that we apply ourselves accordingly.
“This game on Saturday, it is so important to make sure that we get the result.
“There’s a lot of guys here who this might be their last opportunity to represent the country in AFCON, so that shows how important this game is for us.”
Kick-off is at 15h00 on Saturday at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
